On December 13th 2023 I invited Carey Frank, Corey McCormick and Garrit Tillman to my studio to jam. There was no real agenda, other than to have a good time. I of course hired my friend Anthony to capture video and I recorded the whole session. The entire session was completely improvised. Everything was recorded live, all in one take. Family Company is an LA based music collective that celebrates the rich history of soul and blues music with additional inspiration from Americana, folk, funk, and roots traditions. This video is a behind the scenes look at the recording of their single "Old Car" which is a B-side off of their 2022 EP Contributions. All of the songs on the Contributions EP were recorded live, in one take at the Bergatron House Of Music. There is a lot of recording content out there centered around gear. This video provides a deep dive into the setup and the entire signal path on each source, showing you exactly how I recorded this session and the actual gear I used. Gear is important but it doesn't make the music - musicians do. Any decisions I'm making in the recording/mixing process are informed by the music, not the other way around. If you are at a point in your career where you don't have some of these tools, focus on the concepts instead of the equipment and apply this information to whatever equipment you have. These concepts can be vital to any recording situation. With a few key decisions, you can capture a great recording with minimal phase issues and plenty of isolation, even in a room where everyone is just a few feet from each other. You don't need a lot of inputs either. I sincerely hope you find this information useful and try some things for yourself in your next recording!
